Gary Sheffield…

Why take away starts from one of the most promising young players on your team, Daniel Murphy?  Why take away starts from one of the hottest hitters on your team for the last two years (barring massive head trauma), Ryan Church?  Why do it especially, against a right handed starter?

Gary Sheffield is playing baseball for one reason, to add to his home run total.  He’s not going to shorten his swing with the bases loaded and one out to drive in two runs with a single.  He’s going to swing as hard as he can and ground into an inning ending double play.  Those are the facts.  That is Gary Sheffield.  If you’re going to take at bats away from either of your corner outfielders, why not use Fernando Tatis.  The guy proved he can do a serviceable job at either LF or RF.  He proved that he can get a clutch hit.  He proved that if someone hangs a pitch, he’s got the power to knock it out of the park.  So I ask you Jerry Manuel…

Gary Sheffield?… Really?

The really poor man’s Manny Ramirez.  Good thing management decided Manny wasn’t the kind of guy you’d want on your team.  He would add some balls to this otherwise ball-less line up.  Watching David Wright hit this year feels a lot like watching Pedro Cerrano hit at the beginning of Major League 2.  Someone needs to shake a bag of marbles in his face to get him going.  Sure the starting pitching sucks, but you’d notice a lot less if the lineup wasn’t leaving runners in scoring position at the end of every inning.

I know the season is only 15 games deep.  I know there’s no justified cause for concern this far into a baseball season.  I just feel that the lack of heart that has shone through since the end of 2006 seems extremely bright after the first three weeks of the season and it’s disheartening.

After the sweep in St. Louis. Thanks Senad
