Was that good starting pitching?

If John Maine makes another start like this, I say the Mets give him back Maine Street.  One of the worst between inning gimicks ever invented, but unintentionally very funny.  Maine must have listened to a little extra Metallica before the game today.  He gave up 1 unearned run over 6 innings on one hit.  The Mets staff only gave up two hits overall.  The bullpen was solid again getting the final 9 outs of the game.  Frankie got some work in a non-save situation, but struggled a bit with his control walking two.

Solid pitching makes me happy, especially when the Mets jump out to score 6 runs in the first inning.  Four of them coming on one swing of the bat when Omir Santos hit his first home run and drove in his first RBIs on a grand slam.  What will happen to Santos once Brian Schneider comes off the DL?  The pitchers seem to like throwing to him and he’s shown decent pop with the bat.  More than Ramon Castro has shown early in the season so far.

Jerry Manuel seems to think David Wright is coming out of his slump, and there were signs that make me think so too.  He hit a single to right field, and then blasted a long triple to the wall in center.  This was the Mets second triple of the game and their 8th of the short season.  The Mets have only hit 11 hom runs so far as a team.  Citi Field seems to be living up to the “pitcher’s park” reputation it had developed during construction.

Carlos Delgado got what seemed like a much needed night off tonight to rest a sore hip.  Fernando Tatis started in his place.  Hopefully Carlos’ struggles don’t continue too much longer.  It wasn’t too long ago that Carlos had a slump that lasted more than half a season.

One reason for concern was Luis Castillo leaving the game early after successfully beating out an infield hit.  There was no news as of the end of the game, but with Luis’ past, I would assume it’s something with his hamstring or knee.  He’s been hitting the ball so well, let’s hope it’s nothing serious.

All in all it was a very good win tonight.

Lets Go Mets!
