All they needed was beards…

imagesLike Samson’s locks, apparently all the Mets needed to get some home run pop in their swings was some extra hair on their face.  Let’s hope they don’t shave any time soon.  When the Mets go down at Turner Field they don’t often come back, so the 6th innning came as quite a surprise.  Carlos Beltran’s laser beam to center field set the tone for the rest of the game and David Wright’s home run, his second well hit ball of the game gave the Mets the lead.  Wright’s other solid hit was a double to right center.  Seeing Wright hit the ball the other way makes me happier than Stewie Griffin eating a Fig Newton.  It’s something that I wish we could see more of.

John Maine’s fastball was just that today.  Fast.  He struck out 7 over 6 innings but also walked 6.  His walks were the only reason he got in trouble tonight.  Especially in the 3rd inning where his walks came back to bite him, all crossing the plate.  Maine seems to pitch very well when he gets angry, and that’s what seemed to happen after the 3rd run scored in the 3rd inning.  His fastball went up in velocity and effectiveness for the rest of the game.

The bullpen pitched well again, the only hiccup being a Larry Jones HR off JJ in the 8th.  Putz looked very good again aside from the home run.  Parnell pitched a solid 7th inning getting a double play to offset a leadoff walk and K-Rod had a 1-2-3 9th to end the game and pick up his 6th save in as many tries this season.
Oliver Perez was seen in the bullpen, his new home.  Jerry Manuel plans to use Oliver for situational pitching to get 1 or 2 batters out at a time and not for long relief.  I’m not sure how that would help Perez find his control or gain the confidence that he’s seemed to have lost.  Ken Takahashi’s relief of Perez on Saturday seemed to have impressed enough for him to get Ollie’s next start on Friday against Pittsburgh.  Perhaps this time the tables will be turned and Oliver can relieve Ken.
