Good News Mr. Wright

April is over…  David Wright is off to a horrid start, especially struggling with runners in scoring position, hitting a paltry .226.  Based on his high number of strikeouts looking, I’m making the assumption that he’s not seeing the ball well.  I heard in a recent interview, that he feels like he’s being fooled a lot on off speed pitches because he knows he’s struggling and trying to jump on a fastball.  I’ve been saying all season that swing is very long, which means even when he does guess right on a fastball, his bat is not getting around as fast as it should.  These are all problems that will usually work themselves out as they did with Carlos Delgado last season, but with the team’s early season struggles, his personal woes are magnified.

To show how bad his season has started so far, here are what his numbers would look like if he continued at this pace all season.

Wright is on pace for

208 Ks – His previous high is 118

61 RBI – His previous high is 124

8 HRs – His previous high is 33

15 2Bs – His previous high 42

You can see why this slump is causing concern among fans.  One small piece of good news is that 77 of David’s 82 at bats have come against Right-Handed pitching this year.  That type of ratio can’t keep up and athough Wright has never fared this poorly against right-handers before, he will surely get better swings on balls once he faces some more lefties.  As much as I boo and complain about him now, I’m rooting for Wright to pull out of this slump.  The Mets need him.
