So I’m at a wedding last night, sitting at a table with a Red Sox fan, watching the gameday on a cell phone. I watch the game go to the top of the 9th inning with Papelbon coming in to close out the game for the Red Sox. I say “oh well” to myself and prepare for a quick inning and a loss for the Mets where their offense again failed to show up.
Gary Sheffield led off with a walk, and I’m thinking to myself, hey we kinda have a shot here. After all, I remember hearing a stat recently that a lead off walk turns into a run almost 50% of the time. Then David Wright gets K’d on 3 pitches and I think to myself, oh man Papelbon must be pumped up. Then Jeremy Reed goes down swinging and I think it might be time to go get a drink. Then something strange happens.
Anyone that’s ever followed a game on gameday knows the “In Play No Out(s)” monacer. You know that the batter at the plate has reached base safely, but you have no idea what’s happened. That’s what happened with Omir Santos’ at bat. After a while, it showed Santos on 2nd with Sheffield on 3rd, calling the play a double to left field. 5 minutes later, with the same info showing, I start to think the auto-refresh on the phone has stopped working and I start to get angry. How could he not have thrown another pitch yet? What are they taking Papelbon out? What did someone get hurt? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?
Refresh one more time…
Omir Santos home run
Call Overturned
Mets have a 3-2 lead.
WHAAATATATATA!!!
Let’s just say it was one of the more exciting times I can remember watching a game on a cell phone screen!
Mike Pelfrey put in a strong performance going 7 innings and giving up 2 runs on 6 hits. One nice thing about Pelfrey’s day was his 6 strikeouts. He’s not normally a guy that will go out there and get you a lot of K’s but he did it last night.
Frankie Rodriguez is the latest Met to come down with a case of Swine Flu that kept him out of his closer role last night (back spasms). JJ Putz instead closed the game and was lucky to get some solid defense behind him or the inning could have been a lot more interesting.
Tim Redding matches up against Tim Wakefield this afternoon. I’m looking forward to seeing Gary Sheffield take some violent swings against Wakefield’s knuckle ball. Hopefully the Mets can string together another win and come out at .500 on this long road trip. I would be less disgruntled if that happened for sure.
Let’s Go Mets
