We wish…
Joe Fiorello | June 21, 2009The Mets completed a sweep of the visiting Tampa Bay Devil Rays this afternoon, with Mike Pelfrey putting in what may be the strongest effort of his short career to date, giving up no runs on two hits through eight innings. Frankie Rodriguez continued his perfect streak, striking out the side to pick up his twentieth save of the season as the Mets cruised to their fifteenth victory in their last twenty.
Jose Reyes had another productive day, going 2-3 with a walk, two stolen bases, and three runs scored. Carlos Delgado added some instant offense in the third, as he smacked his seventeenth home run of the season off the Pepsi Porch in right field to open to open the scoring. David Wright continued his MVP like season, going 3-4 with an RBI double in the sixth. Wright is putting up the kind of numbers Mets fans always knew he was capable of, batting .345 with twelve homers and fifty five RBIs. Carlos Beltran ended the Mets scoring on the day in the eight, as he knocked in two runs with a single to center to give the Mets a 4-0 lead.
Ryan Church made a tremendous play in the field in the sixth inning to get Mike Pelfrey out of the only tight situation he faced all night after giving up a single and two walks. With the bases loaded and one out, Evan Longoria hit a fly ball to right that Church settled under for the second out of the inning. Church fired a cruise missile home to double up Jason Bartlett trying to tag up to give the Rays their first run of the afternon, bailing out Pelfrey and allowing his outing to go a little longer.
The Mets are now a full ten games in first, sporting an MLB best 47-20 record. The team seems to be clicking on all cylinders right now, with the offense scoring runs at a prolific rate and the pitching staff combining for the best ERA in baseball. Citi Field has done a great job of keeping the visiting team in the park, as the Mets staff has only allowed fifteen home runs on the season to date. Things couldn’t be much better for the team so far. Hopefully the good fortunes continue as the team approaches the All Star break. It might not be much of a break for the Mets, as four of their players, David Wright, Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, and Johan Santana are leading their respective positions in voting.
The Mets start a series against the St. Louis Cardinals tomorrow, and the great weather we’ve been seeing in New York should continue, making for another great night of baseball in Flushing. John Maine will make a play for his eight win of the season so far as he faces off against Todd Wellemeyer. Maine is looking to continue his hot streak, going for his third straight win, and trying to pitch into the seventh inning for the fourth consecutive time.
It’s a good time to be a Mets fan in Flushing. LETS GO METS!
Is this all really that far fetched? If I read this at the beginning of the season, would I think it was impossible? Wouldn’t it be much more fun for us all if it was really happening this way? Could it be farther from the truth? Welcome to the world of the DISGRUNTLED METS FAN!
