Expectations and 2010: Would you give it up for an organizational change?

In light of the few changes the Mets are making in the organization for 2010, I’m wondering what fans really want for 2010.

It’s clear (as clear can be with the Mets) that Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya would almost certainly be gone if the Mets had another tough season next year-I’d say tough, meaning, less than 85 wins.

But here’s my first problem. I feel that the organization always reacts in response to the fan base’s expectations for the previous year. And due to the failings in 2007, 2008, and now 2009, expectations have incrementally decreased each year. My fear is that the Wilpons’ standard becomes lower each year, with essentially more leeway for failure being given based on the increase in failure in the previous year.

I know this is kind of scatterbrained, so let me bring it back. Whatever one operationally defines as failure for the Mets (that definition ultimately being up to Wilpon) would lead to the firing of Minaya and Manuel. My question is this: If it meant certainty that the organization would undergo a complete change, would you accept “failure” in 2010?

My fear is that, along with other fans, I’ve become so discouraged that it’s difficult to root for this team because each year, expectations are lower; all this despite the fact that 2009 was interrupted by so many bad breaks (although a lot of failings weren’t due to these bad breaks). So if expectations are lower for 2010, it might end up being HARDER to fire Omar and Jerry based on, say, an 85-win season next year, since it will have been an “improvement.”

So I state again: Would you sacrifice the 2010 season if it meant a new GM and manager? (There should be a poll coming for this soon)

I’m not so sure what I’d think. I’m torn between the idea that I should have faith in the organization, due to a complete aberration of injuries in 2009, 89 wins in 2008, 88 wins in 2007, and a solid playoff run in 2006; or, should all the NEGATIVES of these years completely invalidate any faith I should have in the organization?

This is such a tough nut to crack, with this team, sometimes…no fan has to go through analyzing the dichotomy of the good vs. the bad as Met fans do. It’s becoming exhausting.
