Dan Uggla a fit for the Mets?
Dave Meisel | December 7, 2009A quick thought…my logic may be faulty here, but the Mets are looking for power, somewhere. What if they traded for Uggla (probably the most freely available power bat in the trade market), batted him 5th, playing second, and went for a faster, better defensive player (Pagan, etc.) in LF? I know LF can’t compensate for defense at 2B, but could it be a “compromise?”
Uggla, for his career, is just below average as a defender (he’s had 2 bad years, 2 above average years) with a -2.9 UZR in 4 seasons. He walks a lot and showed the power to hit the ball out of Citi Field this year. I think the power can compensate for the defense…

I don’t agree. Why add another weak link to the chain. Let’s hold out for REALLY good players. We have the money, so let’s take the time. Get rid of Delgado; move Wright over as you suggested, and find a good fielding 3d baseman. Please no more weak defense for the sake of ‘power’ which somehow never materializes as promised. No more ‘knuckleheads’ either!!!
Exactly who do we have in our farm system to trade for him? Other than no one of course.
Check out the FanGraphs.com review of the Mets’ top 10 prospects. The system isn’t as dry as you think. It’s in the high teens in terms of MLB farm systems, around 16th-23rd. It’s not the worst, honestly. Maybe we can’t trade a bunch of guys for a Roy Halladay, but an Uggla would be easy to trade for-probably just one pitcher and Ruben Tejada or something like that.
