New York Mets Game 2: Here’s Where the Real Test Begins

Sure we all felt really good after Monday’s dismantling of the Florida Marlins. How could we not?

The Mets played a great game. They played the type of baseball that could find them in the post season come September.

Unfortunately, as we all know, a baseball season is a marathon and not a sprint.

The rest of the season starts tonight, in the first game of the new year where Johan Santana is not the starting pitcher.

The newly shuffled pitching rotation will pit John Maine against Ricky Nolasco.

Perhaps Jerry Manuel made an intelligent (if possible) decision moving Maine up to the number two spot in the rotation? Maine has owned the Marlins in his career, with the current roster coming in at a .204 average against him.

No one can deny that a good start will go a long way toward getting Maine back on track, (I’m aware that I’m claiming Maine was ever on track, just go with it) and getting on track should be easier against a lineup that has struggled against you.

Ricky Nolasco hasn’t had the same success against the current Mets lineup that Maine has had against the Marlins.  The current Mets have batted .331 against him, and David Wright has three home runs in 36 at bats.

We may be on our way to a 2-0 record, but I’m remaining skeptical.

I’ll be at the park tonight, and cell phone service permitting will be tweeting throughout the game.  Follow me @disgruntmetsfan to keep up.

Let’s Go Mets!
