Don’t look now, but the New York Mets are on the aforementioned winning streaks, and are the hottest team in Major League Baseball. They are 11-2 in June.
Tonight’s game was a breeze (well, pretty much) as the Mets took a 5-0 lead in the third behind Jon Niese. Angel Pagan opened up the scoring with an RBI double, Wright followed with a 2-run double, Ike Davis doubled to bring in David, and finally Jason Bay doubled to bring home right. Yes folks, that’s four consecutive RBI doubles in that third inning.
Niese gave a few back in the fourth on Shelley Duncan’s second 2-run homer in as many nights, and one back in the fifth on an RBI single by Carlos Santana, who was thrown out attempting to stretch it into a double.
Jeff Francoeur added an RBI single and Angel Pagan a 2-run, 2-out single in the 6th to put the Mets up 8-3.
They hit some trouble in the eighth when Jenrry Mejia walked the two batters he faced to start the inning, and Elmer Dessens also walked a batter, but Dessens pulled it together and allowed just one man to score on a sac fly before ending the inning with a 5-4-3 double play. Elmer finished the ninth to propel the Mets to an 8-4 victory.
The Mets are on cruise control right now. The game they are playing will be good enough to compete with any beat any team, looking forward to the Yanks, Tigers, and Twins. Even more enticing is the fact that they still await Carlos Beltran and a possible trade acquisition before the stretch run starts.
Let’s go Mets!
