The Mets lost to the Yankees today, seeing their away winning streak end at 7 and their overall streak end at 8.
Jose Reyes led off the game with an absolute bomb against Phil Hughes, but Mike Pelfrey quickly gave it back.
Jose then popped a ball just over the right-field fence in the third, but Pelfrey, again, gave it back on a 2-run homer. Pelfrey, who was not sharp today, allowed a 2-run homer to Curtis Granderson in the next inning, and Phil Hughes, who had not given up a lead all year, didn’t this time.
In the eighth, Ryota Igarashi walked the leadoff man and allowed a tough-luck double on a ball Angel Pagan lost in the sun, but got a flyout, a strikeout, and a groundout to short to end the inning. The Mets were retired in order in the ninth.
A frustrating loss, just because you see the win streak come to an end, and you would have loved to see the Mets get a chance to sweep the Yankees. Also because watching Pelfrey today was like watching paint dry-if he got ahead, he gave it back (both in counts and scoring), and he pitched into a ton of unfavorable counts (seemingly getting a 3-ball count once or twice an inning). Pelfrey, however, did give the Mets seven innings.
Santana against Sabathia at 1 PM tomorrow. Big game, and the Mets need to see Santana be at his best.
