Start of the Puerto Rico Series, Other Stuff

The Mets took a loss to start their series in Puerto Rico at the Marlins, 10-3 tonight.

Mets pitching did not fare well, as R.A. Dickey came back to Earth, allowing 5 runs in 5 innings, his knuckler not doing the job in the muggy Puerto Rico climate. Fernando Nieve and Ryota Igarashi also allowed 2 and 5 runs a piece.

Jason Bay accounted for the Mets’ scoring with a solo homer in the second and a 2-run shot later when the game was out of reach, both to the opposite field, his fifth and sixth of the year. Four of Bay’s homers have come in two games.

Considering how well Dickey has pitched, you have to live with it. But I hope the Mets can win the next two against Florida with Takahashi and Pelfrey going, considering the Mets seemed to be playing in front of a home crowd tonight.

Angel Pagan sat again today, and the story everyday seems to be “he’ll be in the lineup tomorrow.” I hope this doesn’t become another one of those things…

Mejia has a shoulder strain and will resume pitching when the pain goes away. It doesn’t seem to be a very long-lasting type thing.

I don’t feel like either injury will hamstring (pardon the pun) the Mets as they approach the trade deadline, as Omar Minaya seems to believe he does not need to trade either Pagan or Mejia to get a deal done for one of the guys atop his list. But the Mets got a bit of bad luck this weekend for sure, and seeing how valuable Pagan has been (and how mediocre Jesus Feliciano is) the Mets need him back.

The Mets are lucky, however, that they will miss the torrid Josh Johnson in this series.
